About the Forsyth Fountain

Standing at the heart of Forsyth Park since 1858, the Forsyth Fountain is one of Savannah's most photographed and beloved landmarks. Commissioned during a period of rapid growth for the city, the fountain was installed as the centerpiece of a newly expanded public park — a bold expression of civic pride in antebellum Savannah that has endured for more than 165 years.

The fountain's elegant tiered design draws inspiration from notable European fountains, including those found in the Place de la Concorde in Paris. Cast in iron and standing roughly 34 feet tall, its sculpted figures, ornamental basins, and cascading water have made it one of the most recognizable public fountains in the United States. Through wars, hurricanes, and generations of change, the fountain has been carefully restored and preserved — a reflection of how deeply Savannah values this irreplaceable piece of its identity.

Over the decades, the Forsyth Fountain has become far more than a monument. It's a gathering place — for celebrations, quiet afternoon walks, family portraits, and millions of memories. It's been dyed green for St. Patrick's Day, illuminated during the holidays, and has come to symbolize the beauty, resilience, and charm that define Savannah itself. For visitors from across Georgia and around the world, experiencing the Forsyth Fountain in person is one of those moments that stays with you.

We're building a new digital home to honor the fountain's rich history, architectural beauty, and the vibrant community that surrounds it. ForsythParkFountain.com will serve as both a digital museum and a destination — featuring historical archives, rare photography, visitor guides, and something special for those who want to bring a piece of the fountain home with them. Whether you've stood beside the fountain a hundred times or are just discovering it for the first time, our mission is to share the story of this Savannah treasure with the world.
